Built in the 17th century, Fort Aguada is a Portuguese fort that overlooks the Mandovi River and the Arabian Sea. Located on Sinquerim Beach, about 18 kilometres from Panjim, the fort consists of a four-story lighthouse which is one of a kind in Asia! The fort, which was named after the Portuguese word for water, Agua, and served as a freshwater replenishment point for sailors. 5. Basilica of Bom Jesus

The Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa is a church that has left its mark on the history of Christianity in India. Though many tourists come to Goa for the beaches, many others visit to embark on a pilgrimage to this important religious monument. 

 

The church  dates to the late 16th century and comprises the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier. The triangular roofing of the church is carved with the initials IHS, an abbreviation for the Jesuit insignia meaning – Jesus, Saviour of Men.

 

The Basilica's floor is built of mosaic marble tiles with gemstones, giving it an ancient appearance. The inside is adorned with a screen that stretches from floor to ceiling and depicts St. Ignatius Loyola guarding a new-born Jesus. It is a sight to behold!

 

6. Butterfly Beach

As interesting as its name, the butterfly beach is one of Goa's most remote and lesser-known beaches. The beach is also known as the 'Honeymoon Beach' and is surrounded by a deep forest and tops the list of places to visit in Goa for couples. 

 

Butterfly Beach derives its name from the surrounding trees that occasionally attract a diverse variety of butterflies and not to mention the shape of the beach, which resembles a butterfly. 7. Fontainhas and Sao Tome

Fontainhas and Sao Tome is a vibrant neighbourhood in Panaji, situated on the banks of Ourem Creek, named after the local natural springs. It was built in the 18th century by a Goan business tycoon. 

 

The district is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known for its attractive Portuguese-style residences at the foot of the Altinho hills. The place is perfect for taking pictures with the colourful heritage buildings, which will take you back in time! In fact, these  buildings have been a part of many Bollywood films and songs. 

 

8. Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

'Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception' is one of Goa's most popular and oldest chapels. The church, built in the Portuguese Baroque style, is situated in the middle of Panjim. It is famous for housing Goa's second-largest church bells. These bells are believed to have been taken from the Augustinian ruins of the 'Church of Our Lady of Grace' in Old Goa.

 

The Immaculate Conception Church was established in 1541 and  was replaced in the 1600s by a grand edifice. The church's exterior is perfectly white, with a double flight of stairs leading  to the hilltop (where it is located). 9. Dona Paula

Dona Paula is a renowned tourist attraction in Goa, known for its long stretch of beach. It is also known as 'Lover's Paradise' and has an adjacent jetty that offers an exquisite view of the Arabian Sea and Mormugao harbour. There is also a whitewashed statue known as the 'Image of India', depicting Mother India and Young India. 

 

The Dona Paula is named after the then-Goa Viceroy's daughter Dona Paula de Menezes, honouring her tragic love story. She is said to have fallen in love with a local fisherman, but the Viceroy forbade her from marrying him. As a result, she jumped from a cliff and christened herself. The beach is also a meeting point for rivers Zuari and Mandovi, but the tourists are primarily attracted to the place because of its story. 

 

10. Anjuna Flea Market

Anjuna Flea Market is a treasury of handicrafts, bohemian apparel, souvenirs, and other pocket friendly  items. The market is also known as the 'Queen of Hippie Flea Markets' and is a part of the tourist experiences in Goa. 

 

The Flea Market also features live music, band performances, and a great deal of other amusing events  . The shacks on the beach serve delicious seafood and refreshing beer.
