1. The Red Fort
Shah Jahan built the stunning Red Fort or Lal Qila in 1648, which served as the centre of Mughal sovereignty until 1857. The Red Fort, , is one of India's most iconic landmarks and is a significant tourist attraction in Delhi.
This magnificent building, with its tall, red sandstone walls, spans over 200 acres and is in the shape of a half-moon, encircled by a moat. The fort's structure is testimony to Mughal architectural inventiveness and skill.
2. Qutub Minar
Built in the 12th century, the Qutub Minar is India's tallest heritage tower. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many international visitors visit the ginormous architecture.
The five-story tower stands more than 70 metres tall and is decorated with exquisite carvings depicting Qutub's history as well as Quranic inscriptions. It also exhibits a 2000 years old iron pillar, popular amongst tourists for its rust-resistant composition.
3. Humayun's Tomb
Humayun's tomb, as the name suggests, is the eternal sacred space of Mughal Emperor Humayun. It is the first garden-tomb in the Indian subcontinent and is located in the Nizamuddin East neighbourhood of Delhi.
The architectural brilliance of Humayun's tomb is difficult to overlook. This majestic tomb's splendour is accentuated even more during the winter season, making it to the list of Delhi's best places to visit.
4. Lodi Gardens
Lodi Gardens, one of New Delhi's most famous parks among locals, is worth adding to your Delhi Darshan.
The popular architectural attraction at Lodi Garden includes 15th-century mausoleums sheltering the Lodi Sultans' remains, a gorgeous triple-domed mosque, famed for its blue tiles, and the remnants of a massive dome dating from around 1490!
Lodi Gardens is also famous for its biodiversity of flora and fauna, which includes over 100 types of natural trees, 50 species of butterflies, and an abundance of birdlife. The very popular National Bonsai Park is also situated in the campus of this garden.
5. Gurudwara Bangla Sahib
The 18th-century Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, Delhi's most prominent Sikh worship site, is situated near the famous Connaught Place and is another tourist attraction in Delhi. On a single day, almost a thousand people visit this haven of peace!
The Gurudwara's complex includes a large prayer hall, a sacred Sarovar or lake, a high school, a hospital, the Baba Baghel Singh Museum, and a library. Visitors are served Kada Prasad and free langar (community meals).
6. India Gate
India Gate is a majestic stone gateway constructed as a memorial to Indian soldiers who died in World War I and is also among the top tourist attractions in Delhi.
Underneath the colossal building, an eternal flame known as the Amar Jyoti Jawan burns 24x7, and its walls are etched with the names of more than 90,000 troops who sacrificed their lives in the war. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed this 42-meter-tall historical landmark structure which holds the grand Annual Republic Day Parade and is also one of the country's largest war memorials. India Gate is the city's most popular picnic spot, thanks to its rich history and stunning architecture.
7. Jama Masjid
The Jama Masjid is one of India's biggest mosques and Shah Jahan's ultimate architectural achievement.
This stunning edifice, completed in 1658, has three entrances, four-angled towers, and two 40-meter-high minarets made of red sandstone and white marble, alternated in vertical stripes. You can also climb to the top of the southern tower for panoramic views of Old Delhi.
When visiting the Jama Masjid, you can also take a quick pit stop in the bustling streets of Chandani Chowk, loaded with shopping streets and eateries.
8. Chandani Chowk
Shah Jahan, the Mughal monarch of India, built Chandani Chowk in the 17th century. A tree-lined canal ran through its centre, reflecting the moon. As a result, the place was named Chandni Chowk.
Chandani Chowk, with its tiny alleyways and stores battling for space, has the atmosphere of medieval Delhi. Since the 17th century, this area has been known as a shopper's paradise. Since this is a wholesale market, most things are available at steep discounts! 9. Jantar Mantar
Jantar Mantar is a massive observatory constructed in 1724 by Maharaja Jai Singh to further the studies of spacetime. It was built as part of a group of five observatories located in Jaipur, Ujjain, Varanasi, and Mathura. These instruments are maintained regularly without any major changes to preserve their longevity.
